The Youth Work Act 2001 defines youth work as follows: ‘Youth work means a planned programme of education designed for the purpose of aiding and enhancing the personal and social development of young persons through their voluntary participation, and which is complementary to their formal, academic or vocational education and training and provided primarily by voluntary youth work organisations’
About UBU
UBU Your Place Your Space is a funding scheme which provides local services for young people
UBU Your Place Your Space was developed in line with recommendations from the Value for Money and Policy Review of Youth Programmes (2014) through the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA). A series of recommendations were made in relation to the redevelopment of a new scheme to replace the existing funding schemes.
UBU Your Place Your Space aligns with the Better Outcomes, Brighter Futures National Policy Framework, the National Strategy on Children and Young People’s Participation in Decision-Making, and the LGBTI+ and National Youth Strategies.

To provide out-of-school supports to young people in their local communities to enable them to overcome adverse circumstances and achieve their full potential by improving their personal and social development outcomes.

UBU Chill on the Hill Youth Programmes
Homework Support
The objective of homework support is to complete homework in a non- formal setting with supports, presenting a positive attitude towards education with a view to preventing early leaving.
Age group:
10 to 12 years.
Times:
Monday to Thursday 3pm to 5pm
Teen Homework Support:
Supported homework for teenagers, who are given a space to complete homework, research, projects and study.
Age group:
13 to 17 years.
Times:
Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 4pm to 6pm
Youth Arts Programme
This is a youth centred programme, it is created by and with young people with support and guidance from youth worker and arts tutor on various projects. The aims and objectives of the arts classes are to introduce young people into the arts and to give them the opportunity to develop their own creative and social skills and to experience different art media and to learn and develop their own creative and problem solving skills. Giving them opportunities to put together a portfolio and exhibit their work.
Age group:
Tuesdays 7 to 9pm.
Times:
Between 13 to 17 years.
Youth Health & Fitness Group:
The aim of this programme is to introduce young people to and to raise awareness of self-care through fitness such as basketball, tennis and football and healthy eating options. Opportunities to participate in a variety of mental and physical challenges

Times:
Wednesday, 3pm to 5.30pm
Youth Café:
The aim of this group is to connect with young people who are not accessing the youth service and to provide opportunities to build positive relationships with youth workers and service, to offer information and supports in response to their needs. The youth cafe provides a safe environment for the young people to drop in, play games, listen to music and chat in a drug and alcohol free environment.
Age group:
14 to 18 years.
Times:
Wednesday and Friday 6.30pm to 9pm.
Thrive Personal Development programme:
The ‘Thrive’ project is a 24 week programme that focuses on improving the young person’s mental and physical health and promote personal development through a person centred and task driven approach (physically and mentally). The programme covers; goal setting and achievements, confidence/self-esteem building, mindfulness/meditation, life skills for stress tolerance, self-awareness on triggers and coping tactics, physical activities through Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), , open discussions, reading, time keeping, diary keeping/journals, introduction to recommended self-help books, gratitude – showing kindness to self and others, nutrition with health eating options, discipline and team work, diary keeping/journals, introduction to recommended self-help books, gratitude – showing kindness to self and others, nutrition with health eating options, discipline and team work. This programme is funding by the RTE Toy Show Appeal Fund.

Easter and Summer Camps
The Easter and Summer camps are open to all the children and young people who attend the service as well as for targeted families who may not be going away for any holiday breaks. The summer camp includes various activities mostly outdoors both challenging and fun. Activities are also chosen that are suitable for all ages. The camps are a good way to get the know young people in an informal setting and can also be part of a reward at the end of the season or year.

Youth Music Group
The main objective to providing a music course is to give young people the opportunity to learn how to play different instruments, lyric writing, building confidence and getting to know the youth service. They also learn how to work together as a band, how to prepare for a performance, setting up a stage, the importance of team work, building confidence. Providing opportunities for performance. Build relationship with the youth workers and the youth service.

15 to 19 years

One to one supports:
Daily scheduled and unscheduled one to one supports. Supporting young people with seeking courses, job applications, interview skills and C.V.’s
Youth Sexual Health Hub:
Information and advice on sexual health for young people in youth centre’s sexual health hub (supported by Cork Sexual Health Centre and CETB)
